You may remember I was not exactly a big fan of Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer. Sure it was cool, and as a Norwegian, it was fun to read about Norse mythology, but Magnus just is just a blond Percy Jackson. However, this new Apollo series is magical! He faced us. “You hear that, guys? A batch of cookies is depending on me. If you get me killed on the way to camp, I am going to be ticked off.” First of all, there’s the fact that he’s a god who has to adjust to the reality of being a teenager. His utter disgust of acne is all of us. His narrative is different, his world is different, and his relatableness is perfect. I never thought I’d find a greek god relatable. “Yep, that pretty much describes my life: because Poseidon.” Apollo gets banished from Mt. Olympus and turned into a mortal by Zeus because of his son Octavian, who basically turned evil. So Apollo gets tossed in the NYC slums, eventually finds his way to Camp Half-Blood, and finds out that the Oracle of Delphi has been taken over by the Python. The camp is being attacked, Rachel Elizabeth Dare has gone missing, and none of the demigods we read about in the previous books are present, due to communication problems (Iris message not working, email not functioning). Well, Percy makes a little appearance at the beginning and the end. The glow became brighter: a holographic golden sickle with a few sheaves of wheat, rotating just above Meg McCaffrey. A boy in the crowd gasped. “She's a communist!” Apollo and his demigod friend Meg go on a quest to find the Grove of Dodona while the less than twenty campers wait. There’s a new villain who may of may not have been behind both the Titan War and the War against Gaea, and Apollo’s the only one who can stop him. Oh, and there’s a pretty sickening betrayal at the end. “Check your spam folder. The prophecies might be there. No? Well, I'm stumped. Bye.” Fun times. Anyways, it’s a very enjoyable read, an extension of the PJ universe, but also a very original story. Props to Riordan for recovering well from the Magnus Chase disappointment. P.S. Can we just talk about Nico and Will being a thing? Because that’s so cute!! P.P.S. Leo Valdez makes his return at the end of the book, which gives me LIFE!
